DOLE –IX Hosts 14th BOSH Ttraining

The emerging culture of Safety and Health is apparent in the world of work, hence, also an opportune time that Basic Occupational Safety and Health (BOSH) Training was conducted on May 24-28, 2010 at Bay Plaza Hotel, Pagadian City.

This 14th BOSH Training was conducted in response to the request and needs of forty (40) participants coming from the water districts, electric cooperatives, mining corporations, medical hospitals/centers, academes, construction firms, commercial and industrial/manufacturing companies of the Zampen Region.

The BOSH aims at preventing accidents and illnesses at the workplace, increase in productivity, boost the moral and corporate image of any entities and promote healthy and happy workforce at the workplace.

During the Opening Program, Provincial Head of the DOLE-Zamboanga del Sur Provincial Office, Ms. Virginia L. Bonbon who represented the Regional Director Ponciano M. Ligutom, welcomed and posted encouragement to participants for them to fully be attentive of the 5-day training, for this is very important in minimizing and preventing accidents and illnesses at the workplace.

Lecturers came from the Occupational Safety and Health Center (OSHC) based in Manila and Cagayan De Oro City and from the Department of Labor and Employment Regional Office IX (DOLE-IX) tackled the following topics: Ms. Maria Erica V. Mercado handled exercises and topics on Introduction to OSH ( Identifying/recognizing Unsafe/Unhealthy Acts and Conditions; Engr. Dennis C. Aquino discussed the Occupational Safety on Fire Safety, Electrical Safety, Safety Inspection, Accident Investigation, and Development/Improvement of OSH Programs at the establishment level and GKK Framework; Engr. Rynie T. Zamuco discussed on Occupational Environment specifically on Industrial Hygiene and its Control Measures; Dr. John Dale M. Hizon comprehensively discussed the topic on Occupational Health – the Physical, Biological, Chemical, Ergonomic Hazards and their Potential Health Effects; Engr. Wesley D. Tan facilitated the topic on Responses to OSH Issues and Concerns and OSH System in the Philippines; while Engr. Eliezer Cabatingan who also served as the Training Facilitator, handled the topics on Housekeeping, Materials Handling and Storage, Machine Safety and the importance of Personal Protective Equipment as part of the Occupational Safety component.

As an integral component of the activity, to expose participants on the identification of occupational hazards, occupational safety, occupational environment and occupational health, a plant visit at Ramona Construction was facilitated for this purpose.

At the end of the 5-day Session, the BOSH Batch 14 participants were very enthusiastic to adapt and apply all the practical learnings from the said training. As an offshoot during the workshop, a Re-Entry Plan was submitted by the respective companies for actual application/implementation subject to monitoring and evaluation of OSHC and DOLE.

This training was also in collaboration with the ZamPen Occupational Safety and Health Network (ZamPen OSHNET) – a federated association of safety practitioners in the region headed by its President, Engr. Eduardo Rivero who provided full support and technical expertise particularly during the planning and implementation stages of the aforesaid endeavor.
